NEW KOI POND 2004

This is the small pond I had prior to May 2004. It was kidney shaped and held just 65 gallons of water. |

I started the project by removing the rock edging and taking out the preform pond. I cut down the overgrown, winter damaged shrubs and started removing them. |

Next, I dug a hole (such fun...) to
accommodate the new preform pond, a 160 gallon "Cancun". Once
the hole was just a little bigger than the preform, I shaped it to have
the "shelves" and put the preform in. Once I had it just
right, I removed the preform and added a few inches of sand to cushion
the bottom and the shelves. Then I put the preform back in, using a
carpenter's level to make sure it sat right in the hole. Then I started
backfilling around the preform with sand and soil while slowly filling
with water. |

Once the pond was filled with water, I arranged rocks around the edging of the preform and built a waterfall. I am using a Pondmaster pump that moves 190 gallons an hour. I have a large foam block around the pump which gets rinsed along with foam inside the cover of the pump a couple of times a week. |

Then I got to the fun part...landscaping! I also added the first pond plant...a hardy lily. |

August - the pond plants sure have grown! I added more, smaller rocks around the edge of the pond with different ground covers growing between them. |

I placed a longer bridge over the pond and built a low stone wall behind the pond garden area, along the front of the trelis below the porch. |
